Choosing an Ophthalmologist
Serving Seattle, Bellevue, Everett, Olympia, and Tacoma, Washington
Choosing an ophthalmologist is an extremely important and personal decision. After all, ophthalmologists offer total eye care and may, depending on your situation, perform surgical procedures on your eyes. Because of this, you need to ensure two things: that the ophthalmologist is qualified to perform the required procedures, and that you feel comfortable with and have confidence in your eye surgeon.
The ophthalmologists at Bellevue LASIK & Cornea Center are both qualified and you can trust in our level of care for all your eye needs.
What an Ophthalmologist Needs to Have
At a minimum, an ophthalmologist must demonstrate that he or she has the following:
- A license to practice in your state
- Certification through an accredited medial institution
- Credentials indicating that he or she is an ophthalmologist and, therefore, qualified to perform surgical procedures
If an ophthalmologist cannot demonstrate the above at a minimum, then you should look elsewhere for treatment.
Questions to Ask an Ophthalmologist
If you find that an ophthalmologist can produce the necessary credentials, the next step is to guarantee that he or she has a respected practice and that you feel comfortable with this person providing care. To that end, consider asking any or all of the following questions:
- How long have you been performing eye surgeries?
- What service or surgery options do you provide your patients?
- How do you typically guide patients through the pre- and post-operative processes?
- How do you keep yourself updated on recent developments in the field of ophthalmology?
- What kind of vision improvements can I expect as a result of a given procedure? How do you plan to maximize the result while minimizing risk?
Where to Look for More Information about Your Potential Ophthalmologist
In addition to asking questions of potential ophthalmologists, you may wish to talk with current or former patients to determine quality of care, patient experience, and overall satisfaction. You might request the names of patients from ophthalmologists, or you may search the Internet for online reviews and testimonials.
